Africa

Africa has a remarkable range of attractions, cultures, landscapes and wildlife. When planning a trip to Africa, pack light to accommodate traveling on small bush planes and buses that may have luggage restrictions: Bring only what you need, and remember that laundry service is cheap and widely available.

Take modest, comfortable clothing. This is particularly important for women or travelers to Muslim areas who may experience unwanted attention when dressed in revealing clothing. Mid-length to long skirts, capri pants, tank tops with thick straps and short- or long-sleeved shirts in a light material will be appropriate for most areas. Bring a sarong or two to use as a skirt or to cover shoulders in churches or mosques.

Hot during the day, temperatures can drop at night. Pack light, loose clothing for daytime use, and bring a mid-weight jacket for evening.  Bring a waterproof jacket for occasional rain.  If you will be traveling to South Africa, Namibia or Botswana between April and October, pack extra layers for low temperatures.

Many travelers to Africa go on safari or other outdoor trip. To stay dry and comfortable in the African wilderness, bring outdoor clothing made of wicking material to keep moisture away from your skin. Choose items in neutral colors, which will hide dust and draw less attention from wildlife. Wear a wide-brimmed hat that will keep the sun off of your face.

Bring moisture-wicking socks to reduce the likelihood of rubbing and blisters. Bring long-sleeved shirts and long pants to keep both the sun and bugs from your skin. Mosquito repellent is a must for evenings and mornings. Sunscreen and a pair of sunglasses will provide additional relief from the strong African sun. For trips with extra hiking, bring rip-stop pants that will enable a wide range of movement without tearing.

Many places in Africa have limited power or are subject to occasional blackouts; this is particularly true in very rural areas. Bring a battery-powered headlamp of flashlight and extra batteries to navigate in the dark.  Bring an anti-diarrhea medicine. Pack after-sun lotion for the inevitable sunburn. Take any prescription medications you will need in their original packages.

To increase safety on long bus rides or more dangerous areas, bring a money belt that's worn under your clothes and fits your passport, credit cards and cash.
