Other things you may want to add to your packing list include bug spray for long walks and sightseeing, a first aid kit for minor injuries and cuts, and a power adapter. The power outlets are shaped differently than what you might be used to, and if you have appliances you'll need to plug in, then you will need an adapter. If you don't bring one, ask at your hotel's front desk if they have one you can rent.
While Australians like to think of their society as non-discriminatory, there is still a lingering male domination. Canadians will generally find that Australian men are less old-fashioned or "chivalrous" towards women than Canadian men. Like Canada, many professional organizations will have developed around a male dominance and have a lingering tendency in that direction.
Australian society is made up of many different cultures and therefore the majority of the urban population enjoys the benefits of being among a variety of people, cuisines and cultures. Some rural communities will not have the same exposure to immigrants and international visitors, although the popularity of Australia as a budget traveller destination has affected that. Generally variety is accepted and people of many cultures will be seen in the workplace and are accepted.
The bigger issue of ethnicity is with the Aboriginal Peoples. Historically, the Aboriginal people were treated poorly by the first settlers and it is an ongoing struggle to try and right old wrongs.
Australians are down to earth. It is best to be on a level playing field to get on well. Take the example of the "Tall Poppy syndrome", the "tall poppy" being someone who is wealthier, more successful, and above the others. Australians don’t normally like the "tall poppy" and don’t respond well to that type.
