Archaeological Equipment In The Badlands
Stephen sent in a letter requesting replacement for his worn out Tilley Hat, and included pictures and a "hunk of 65 million year old dinosaur". Nikki asked him for a story for the website."Basically I spend most of my days out in the bush surrounded by art, both ancient and modern. I work at Sagebrush Studios, our premier local art gallery, just outside of Empress, Alberta - a village known mostly for its rattlesnakes, horses, cacti, and its rock art.
For fun, armed with my Tilley Hat and a notebook, my girlfriend Ginni and I travel around the country looking for these rock art sites.
As most of the directions to these locations are either lost or closely guarded provincial secrets, clues must be gleaned from old journals, maps, stories and even legends.
We had an adventure to find the maprock of Cabri Lake, Saskatchewan. We were told to drive "a ways" up an unmarked road, then hike "two horizons" past a distant windmill.
Another adventure was to find the lost civilization of Mansonville, Quebec, probably the spookiest site in Canada.
We also had an adventure to fine the American Man stone beacon of Cupids, Newfoundland; the southernmost Inuksuk of a style found mostly in the high Eastern Arctic.
This will be my third Tilley Hat. I could honestly say that I've never worn a better product. It's the most essential item of archaeological equipment in the field!
Thanks Tilley - Rock On!"
