What to do in Skagway Alaska by Nikki Tilley

I love to travel, particularly by cruise ship, I have my parents to thank for that. In the early 1990s our family took a Western Civilizations cruise and I was hooked. Waking up in a new city every day, yes please! I joined Princesses Cruises as an Assistant Cruise Director after graduating university, and it was a life changing experience. I met amazing people from around the world, as co-workers and guests.

In my three years with Princess I was fortunate enough to visit almost 50 different cities in six different continents. When I talk with clients in store about cruises I’m often asked which destination I would recommend, my choice is always Alaska. My most memorable experience in Alaska was spending time on the deck of the ship as it sailed, watching the amazing scenery. Sometimes when I look at the North Shore mountains I’m reminded of that.

For me the port of call that I loved the most was Skagway; from outdoor adventures to the historic museums, Skagway has something to offer for everyone.

If you are planning to visit Skagway here are my top favourite things to do:

White Pass Scenic Railway

My favourite tour in Skagway is to do the White Pass Scenic Railway tour. The route was created in the Klondike Gold Rush of 1897, and construction began the year later. This narrow gauge railroad is an International Historic Civil Engineering Landmark and you can experience the rich history and amazing sights in a 3.5 hour return trip from Skagway to the Yukon and back on the White Pass Summit Excursion.

River Rafting

Looking for an experience out of the ordinary? Try floating down the river! There are quite a few companies offering excursions, such as Chilkat River Rafting and Scenic River Float. It is a great way to see the beautiful landscape and hopefully some wildlife.

Hiking

Skagway has some amazing hikes, but make sure to be prepared, even in the summer months there is still plenty of snow at higher elevations. Here is a photo of me from my last trip. For more information on hiking in the area check out this website.
